Men’s Soccer to Host Marist College
in NCAA First Round
Huskies to Play Red Foxes
on Saturday at Morrone Stadium
STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 15) – The 2004 BIG EAST Champion
University of Connecticut men’s soccer team will face Marist College in the
first round of the NCAA College Cup Tournament, the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer
Selection Committee announced on Monday afternoon. The match will be played at
Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 12:00 p.m.
The Huskies will be making their 25 th
overall tournament appearance and their seventh consecutive berth. In 2003, the
UConn fell in the NCAA Tournament second round to St. John’s as the Red Storm
advanced on penalty kicks (4-2) after the teams played to a 0-0 tie. Connecticut
has won three National Championships, most recently in 2000.
UConn’s record currently stands at 11-7-3 overall, and the
team completed its BIG EAST schedule with a 5-4-1 record. The Huskies qualified
for their 10 th
consecutive conference tournament appearance, 20th
overall, dating back to 1982 and won their fifth BIG EAST Tournament title.
Connecticut has made the most BIG EAST Tournament appearances, with Seton Hall
close behind with 18 berths. The Huskies missed only three BIG EAST Tournaments,
from 1992-1994.
Marist holds an 11-7-0 record and will make its first NCAA
Tournament appearance in school history after capturing the MAAC Championship
with a 2-0 win over Rider in the final. This will be the first-ever meeting
between the Red Foxes and the Huskies and the winner of the match will move on
to face No. 15 seed Boston College in Newton, Mass. on Nov. 23.
