STORRS, Conn. (Nov.
20) – Sophomore Steve Sealy
(St. James, Trinidad) netted his third game-winning goal in the last
four games to lift the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team past
Marist College, 2-1, in NCAA first round action at
Morrone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams threatened
with opportunities in the first half as Bruno Machado narrowly missed a
goal for the Red Foxes, sending the ball just high over the cross bar in
the 33rd minute. Kevin Burns (Greenfield, Ind.) had a chance for
UConn off a free kick by senior William
Osorio (Miami, Fla.), but headed the ball wide of the net.
The Huskies struck
first with a goal at 48:36. Freshman Chukwudi
Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) connected
with a cross from senior Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, Calif.)
several feet out from the goal line to net his sixth of the year.
With 2:57 left on the
clock, Marist answered, however, as Anthony Graci
scored on a pass from Benjamin Castor, sending the game into overtime.
The Red Foxes’ rally
was brief, as Sealy put the match away for UConn
with his fifth of the year in the 92nd minute off a feed from
Chijindu.
The Huskies
outshot Marist 11-5 and led in corner kicks,
5-4.
Connecticut advances to
the NCAA second round and will travel to Newton, Mass., to face Boston
College on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 4:00 p.m.
