ASCHHEIM, Germany (May 19) - Bonginkosi Macala (Pretoria, South Africa) scored two goals as the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team defeated FC Aschheim by a 3-1 margin on Thursday afternoon in the second game of the Huskies three-contest tour of Germany.

UConn started the match with exclusive possession of the ball for the first four minutes, allowing Aschhiem only one short possession of the ball. The Huskies penetrated several times into dangerous areas around the Aschheim net and finally connected on a header off a cross from Ryan Cordeiro (Highland Mills, N.Y.) that was headed by Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) to Macala who side volleyed it into the lower right hand corner of the goal, giving UConn a 1-0 lead.

The play was fairly even for the next eight minutes until Aschheim got a throw in deep down its left wing. Aschheim lulled the Huskies to sleep waiting for their long throw specialist to arrive from his sweeper position. Even on the wide field, the throw in was delivered into the Connecticut’s goal area and UConn failed to clear it adequately. The Aschheim striker was the first to the ball as he turned on it and had a great shot into the net to tie the score at 1-1.

In the second half, Connecticut’s endurance became the deciding factor and its well-organized defense kept the ball in its possession. Moshe Shalchon (Rishon Lezioh, Israel) was also a key substitution at half time was into the midfield. He created many dangerous opportunities for UConn including one of his own off a cross on a great overlap from Willis Forko (Houston, Texas) (pictured to the left) who was fed the ball by Cordeiro.

At the 51st minute, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead when Cordeiro dribbled into the penalty area and chipped a soft ball in front of the net for a diving Macala who notched his second goal of the contest.

UConn was winning all the head balls at midfield and spraying the ball from sideline to sideline. Their dominance was also on display when Julius James (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad) (pictured to the bottom) carried the ball from the center circle to the 18-yard line and took a great low shot to the post, which made the Aschheim goalkeeper fully extended himself.

At the 79th minute, Cordeiro again controlling the left side of the field chipped the ball in front of net which Aschheim cleared to an open Will Osorio (Miami, Fla.). Osorio touched it once into the 18-yard box and struck a great dipping shot to the upper left hand corner to extend the Huskies’ lead to 3-1. On the ensuing kickoff, Aschheim got its only shot on goal of the half when the striker kicked the ball the full length of the field where Connecticut goalkeeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, Wis.) pulled it down off the cross bar.

UConn returns to action for its final game on the tour on Sunday when it takes on the Under-20 Chinese National Team that is practicing in Germany.
