PROVIDENCE,
R.I. (September 25, 2006) - University of Connecticut men's
soccer player Matt Sangeloty (Farmington, Conn.) was named
the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the conference
office Monday. The freshman goalie helped UConn extend its unbeaten
streak to six games with wins over Sacred Heart (2-0, Sept. 20) and
Georgetown (3-1, Sept. 23).
After giving up an average
of 1.69 goals per game through the first five contests of the
season, Sangeloty recorded his third straight shutout against the
Pioneers. In Saturday's league win over Georgetown, the local
product made two saves. He has allowed only one goal since Sept. 10,
on a penalty kick against the Hoyas in the 65th minute.
Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) was
also recognized for his accomplishments in the last week by the BIG
EAST, earning a spot on the weekly honor roll. The junior forward
tallied his first goal of the season against Georgetown to secure
the win for the Huskies in the 57th minute. He also tallied assists
on each of the Huskies' other two goals against the Hoyas for a
total of four points on the day.
Sangeloty and the Huskies return to action
Wednesday night at 7:00 against Yale at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in
Storrs. UConn is 30-25-3 all-time vs. the Bulldogs, though the two
teams have not faced each other since the 2003 season.
