Morrone Stadium Ranked Among Nation's Best Soccer Venues

Complete List

STORRS, Conn. (April 24, 2008) - Joseph J. Morrone Stadium, the home to University of Connecticut men's and women's soccer, has been named the fourth best soccer venue in the United States, according to Goal.com. DC United's RFK Stadium was ranked No. 1, followed by Indiana's Armstrong Stadium and Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.

From the Web site:

4. Joseph J. Morrone Stadium (Storrs, Connecticut) – Despite playing most of their matches in frigid temps, UConn is always amongst the nation’s leaders in attendance. In addition to witnessing some of the best soccer played on the college level, fans in a five-mile radius are able to hear the unmistakable voice of Ray Reid ring through the night air as he rips into one of his wide midfielders.

Dedicated in 1997 as Joseph J. Morrone Stadium after UConn's 28-year coaching veteran, the field has been the home site for four BIG EAST Champion men's soccer squads in the last 10 years and the 2000 national championship team. In addition, the Huskies have led the nation in total and/or attendance seven of the last 10 seasons. In 2008, a total of 58,392 fans entered Morrone Stadium for an average of 3,244 per game - more than any other season since 1987.

The defending BIG EAST regular season and tournament champion Huskies open the 2008 preseason Aug. 16 at Michigan before returning home to Morrone Stadium Aug. 23 vs. Hofstra. Stay tuned to UConnHuskies.com for the full men's soccer schedule.
