Both Swimming and Diving Teams in Sixth Place After Day Two of BIG EAST

One EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (February 16, 2006) – Both
the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished the second day of
competition at the BIG EAST Championships in sixth place with the men’s two-day
total equaling 129.5 points and the women tallying 114 points.
Abed Kaaki (Ras Tarura, Saudi Arabia) and Chris
Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) both qualified for the finals of the men’s 50
freestyle event. Kaaki secured the eighth place finish for the Huskies (20.70),
while Ferreira took home 15th place (21.09).
Tristan Jones (Wanniassa, Australia) and Mike
McNulty (Hartland, Wis.) had a back-to-back finish in the men’s 200 IM with
Jones capturing ninth place (1:50.86) and McNulty finishing in 10th
(1:51.03).
In the 200 freestyle relay, Ferreira, McNulty and Kaaki
teamed up with Nick Conrad (Olney, Md.) for a sixth place finish
(1:23.00).
On the diving side, the men had a successful evening with
all three competitors making the finals. Kevin Thompson (Stamford, Conn.)
took sixth place in the one meter event (272.30) while teammates T.J.
Ferguson (Plainville, Conn.) and Michael Clifford (West Islip, N.Y.)
finished in 10th and 12th place, respectively.
Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.), Ryan Smith
(Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) all qualified for
their individual events on Thursday evening. Kearns time of 4:55.77 was good for
a 12th place finish in the women’s 500 freestyle. Smith and Shelps
both competed in the 200 IM with Smith finishing in sixth and Shelps in ninth.
The 200 freestyle relay saw Shelps combine with Danielle
Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario), Erin McLaughlin (Woodbridge, Conn.)
and Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.) for ninth place with a time of 1:37.23.
Events will continue tomorrow with the preliminaries scheduled to begin at 10:30
a.m. and finals slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Nassau Aquatics Center.
