Davidson Leads The Way For Husky Men
Women's swimming and diving ties for fifth at BIG EAST while men are fifth

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (February 23, 2008) - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the BIG EAST Conference championship on Saturday as the women's team tied for fifth place and the men's team finished in fifth place.

Notre Dame won both the men's and women's championships with 820 and 767 points, respectively. The UConn men's program tallied 382 points for their fifth place finish, while the women's team finished with 386.

The fifth place finish was the best for the UConn men's program since 1998 when the Huskies also finished fifth. The tied for fifth finish was the best for the Husky women since since a fourth place finish in 1995.

Senior Allison Coleman (New Canaan, Conn.) finished second in both the one meter and three meter diving competitions earlier in the competition and earned BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Diver honor.

Senior Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) finished in second place in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:13.21, which was a NCAA automatic qualifying mark for the Husky. The time was also good for a school record and also the second-best in BIG EAST history. She becomes the second UConn women's swimmer ever to be an NCAA automatic qualifier joining Jacquelyn Craft, when she made the NCAA automatic mark in 2004 in the women's 200 yard breaststroke.

UConn senior Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.) finished sixth in the 1650 freestyle in 16:46.54 for a school record time and a NCAA B qualifying standard mark.

Junior Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) finished sixth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.10.  Kelly Recupero (Stratford, Conn.) also performed well for the Huskies as she swam for her personal best finish in the breaststroke.

For the men, freshman Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) led the way for the Huskies with a third place finish in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:48.26, recording a new program record while earning All-BIG EAST honors.

Freshman Tomas Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) was a seventh place finisher in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:01.66.

In the 200 butterfly, senior Sean Hannan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished with a time of 1:51.15 while junior Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) was sixth with a time of 1:48.05.
