Tennis Teams Lose to Coastal Carolina

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 7) -- Freshman Jaclyn Shapiro (Deerfield, Ill.) won the University of Connecticut women’s tennis team’s lone match of the day as the Huskies fell, 6-1, to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday in Hilton Head, S.C. The UConn men’s team fell by a 7-0 score to the Chanticleers. The Husky men fall to 1-5 on the spring while the Husky women dip to 0-6. The Chanticleer women remain perfect at 11-0 while the Costal Carolina men are now 8-3.

UConn’s men’s team picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as Christian Malerba (Derby, Conn.) and Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) shut out David Mellis and Brian Dowls, 8-0. Coastal Carolina won comfortably at the 1 and No. 2 positions though to take the doubles point. The Chanticleers swept all six singles matches in straight sets to account for the 7-0 victory.

On the women’s side, UConn was swept in doubles competition to open the match as Costal Carolina picked up the point. Singles saw Shapiro pick up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hayley Rudman at No. 2, but the five other Huskies all dropped their matches in straight sets.

The two Husky tennis squads will return to action Wednesday morning when they both face Ithaca College in Hilton Head, the final match of the team’s spring training trip.
