Joel Legare Qualifies For NCAA Indoor Championships While Remainder Of Men's
Track Team Competes In Florida
STORRS, Conn. (March 7, 2006) - After a final week of
waiting, senior co-captain Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) will
head to Fayetteville, Ark. this weekend to compete in the 2006 NCAA
Indoor Track and Field Championships. Legare, who provisionally
qualified in the 800m with a time of 1:48.03, stands ninth on the
national performance list.
While the senior and Head Coach Greg Roy head to Arkansas for the
competition, the remainder of the UConn team will remain in Florida to
compete at the South Florida Invitational on Saturday. The Huskies
opened the 2006 outdoor season last weekend at the Central Florida
Invitational. With this Florida trip serving more as a training trip
to prepare for the season than a competitive trip, various members of
the team competed in events that they might not later on at Central
Florida. Huskies competed in eight events and there was no team
scoring at the meet.
The Huskies dominated the field events at Central Florida, with junior
Jonas TePaske (Freehold, N.J.) tied for first in the pole vault
with a height of 4.59m. Sophomore Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.)
started the UConn run in the shot-put, capturing the title with a
throw of 15.58m. Junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) was second
with a throw of 13.35m and freshman Joseph Staub (Stoneham,
Mass.) took third in 12.38m. The Huskies also captured the top two
spots in the hammer throw, with senior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury,
Conn.) winning with a throw of 52.92m while sophomore David Roy
(Woonsocket, R.I.) was second in 47.65m.
At the 2006 Indoor Championships, the 800m preliminaries will begin at
4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 10. The finals of the event will take place
the following evening at 6:35 p.m. Legare was the lone Husky to
advance to the Championships out of the four preliminary qualifiers on
the team. Junior Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) missed traveling
to Fayetteville to compete in the 200m dash by just 0.01 of a second.
The 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships will take place at Randal Tyson
Indoor Track on the campus of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.
On Saturday, March 11, the South Florida Invitational will begin in
the morning and take place on the campus of the University of South
Florida in Tampa. Following both competitions, a recap and complete
results will be available on UConnHuskies.com. |
