Men's Track and Field Finishes Second in Outdoor BIG EAST Championship
BIG EAST Championship Final Results
VILLANOVA, Pa. (May 4, 2008) - The University of Connecticut men's track
and field team came in second place in the outdoor BIG EAST Championship over
the weekend for the second consecutive year. UConn finished the event with 105
points. Notre Dame won the conference title with 122.50 points. After
Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) won the shot put title on Saturday, two more
Huskies joined him with individual titles on Sunday. Basil Campbell
(Ewing, N.J.) won his second career individual BIG EAST outdoor title
when he took the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.17 seconds. Michael Rutt
(Sinking Spring, Pa.) won his first ever BIG EAST title when he took the
800-meter run with a time of 1:48.08. Other top track performances on Sunday
included Campbell finishing his day with a fourth place finish in the 100-meter
dash with a time of 10.53 seconds, and a fifth place finish in the 110-meter
high hurdles with a time of 14.22 seconds. Troy Rochester (Danbury,
Conn.) was fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.95 seconds. Anthony
Burris (Bridgeport, Conn.) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of
52.86 seconds. The top relay team for Connecticut was their 4x400-meter team of
Rochester, Burris, Campbell and Brian Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.) that
finished third with a time of 3:12.39. In the field events run on Sunday,
Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) took second in the triple jump with a
jump of 50-5½. Patrick Sampson (Middletown, R.I.) was the top finisher
for the Huskies in the hammer throw. He came in sixth with a toss of 171-11.
UConn returns to the outdoor New England Championship next weekend for the
first time since 2005. The meet will take place May 9-10 at the University of
New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
