Taurasi Garners Weekly Conference Honor

PROVIDENCE, RI (Jan. 7, 2002) -- After posting a career-high 32 points in an 86-72 victory against No. 2 Tennessee Saturday afternoon, UConn women’s basketball sophomore Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) has been named Co-BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The honor was the second of the season for Taurasi, and she shares it with Virginia Tech’s Ieva Kublina.

Taurasi averaged 16.7 points, 5.7 assists and 5.0 rebounds in three UConn victories last week. Against Tennessee, the sophomore lit up the Lady Vols with 11-for-16 shooting from the floor, including three three-pointers. Taurasi also shot 7-for-8 from the free-throw line against Tennessee.

Taurasi also took home the Dec. 3 Co-BIG EAST Player of the Week honor with West Virginia’s Kate Bulger. Taurasi joins senior teammate Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) as Huskies who have received the award twice this season.
