Huskies Run Past Georgetown, 85-41, to Remain Perfect This Season

WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 15, 2002) -- Senior Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) had her tenth double-double of the season as the No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team ran past BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 85-41, Tuesday night in Washington, DC. With the win, the Huskies remain perfect with a 19-0 overall record, 5-0 in conference play.

Energized on defense, UConn harassed the Hoya offense from the start. Georgetown never found its rhythm, shooting 25.9 percent from the floor and committing 14 turnovers in the first half, as the Huskies raced to the 43-18 halftime advantage.

Cash had 14 points in the half to led the Huskies, who shot 47.1 percent as a team in the first stanza. Senior Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ) chipped in eight points.

The second half was all UConn as well, as Georgetown continued to struggle under the tenacious Husky defense. While the Hoyas improved their shooting percentage to 32.3 in the second half, they coughed up 11 turnovers and were never able to make a run at the UConn lead.

Although they connected on less than 50 percent of their shots from the field in the game, the Huskies had a season-high 16 steals and shot 89.5 percent from the free throw line.

Cash finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by senior Tamika Williams (Dayton, OH), who registered 13 points, and Jones and senior Sue Bird (Syosset, NY), who each finished with 10 points. Bird also posted eight assists.

For the Hoyas, who are now 9-7 overall, 1-4 in the BIG EAST, freshman standout Mary Lisicky had 12 points and Nok Duany recorded 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.

The Huskies return to action this Saturday when they face Villanova in a noon matchup in Villanova, PA.
