UConn Women's Basketball Games in Live Streaming Video to be Available on
Internet
STORRS, Conn. --- Live streaming video of
at least 18 University of Connecticut women’s basketball games will be
available on the Internet during the 2003-04 season through the
broadcast agreement between UConn and Connecticut Public Television.
The package of Internet games is an extension of CPTV’s coverage of
Husky women’s basketball in Connecticut. The games on the Internet
will be provided through an agreement between CPTV and RealNetworks,
Inc., the leading provider of sports video on the Internet.
RealNetworks will be the exclusive Internet distributor of UConn
women’s basketball games. The webcast of UConn games is the first of
its kind for any collegiate women’s sports program.
A season package of UConn women’s games on the Internet will cost
$39.95 or for a monthly charge of $14.95. Access to the games can be
obtained at either
www.uconnhuskies.com or
www.cptv.org.
A free preview will be offered on Sunday, Nov. 23, as the Huskies play
Western Michigan at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.
“We are proud, once again, to be bringing the nation our innovative
coverage of women’s basketball,” said Jerry Franklin, President and
Chief Executive Officer of Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc., the
parent company of CPTV. “We first teamed with UConn in 1994 to offer
women’s basketball to the loyal fans in Connecticut, and we set a
precedent then. Today, we are taking our game to the next level and
using the latest technology to bring our coverage to an even larger
viewer base. Now fans throughout the country – whether they are
traveling on business, away at college or unexpectedly delayed at the
airport – can catch the games via their laptop computers and not miss
a minute of the excitement of UConn women’s basketball, as the Huskies
strive for a third consecutive NCAA Championship.”
“The University of Connecticut is very pleased that Husky fans
throughout the nation will now be able to see many of our women's
basketball games through streaming video,” said UConn Director of
Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway. “Our program has always been the national
leader in terms of women's basketball media exposure -- whether it be
electronic or print. This expansion of coverage to streaming video
will continue to keep UConn in the forefront. We are very grateful to
Connecticut Public Television and RealNetworks for being leaders in
this new and exciting technology.”
In addition to the live game broadcasts, the UConn women’s basketball
programming package includes episodes of coach Geno Auriemma’s
television show, on-demand instructional videos and past championship
videos.
“This is a terrific package of games to add to our lineup of premier
live sports programming,” said Peter Gruman, RealNetworks General
Manager, Sports Business Affairs.
“UConn women’s basketball is the premier collegiate women’s basketball
program in the country with a strong national following. We are very
excited to be able to bring this offering to UConn and women’s
basketball fans around the country, enabled in part by the forward
thinking of Connecticut Public Broadcasting and the University of
Connecticut.”
