UConn to Face South Florida-Notre Dame Winner in Quarterfinals of 2006 BIG EAST Championship Sunday at 6 p.m.

STORRS, Conn. (February 28, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team (26-4, 14-2) will face the winner of Saturday’s first round game between No. 7 seed South Florida (19-10, 9-7) and No. 10 seed Notre Dame (17-10, 8-8) in Sunday’s quarterfinal round of the 2006 BIG EAST Championship at the Hartford Civic Center beginning at 6:00 p.m. (ET).

Sunday’s quarterfinal games will be televised live on CSTV (College Sports Television/Direct TV Channel 610).

The Huskies will be making their 24th BIG EAST Tournament appearance and boast an all-time record of 45-11 (.804) in the event along with a conference-record 12 tournament titles.

UConn enters this year’s BIG EAST Championship as the defending champion as it defeated Rutgers 67-51 in the title game last season. Current UConn senior Barbara Turner (Cleveland, Ohio) was named as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 BIG EAST Championship following a 15.7 scoring average during the Huskies’ run to the title.

Connecticut owns a 2-0 combined mark vs. potential quarterfinal opponents South Florida and Notre Dame in the 2005-06 regular season. The Huskies defeated the Bulls 77-47 at the Hartford Civic Center on Jan. 24 and handed the Irish a 79-64 setback in South Bend, Ind., on Feb. 19.

With a win Sunday, UConn will advance to Monday’s semifinal round, which would see them play at 8:00 p.m. (ET). Monday’s semifinal contests will be televised live on ESPNU (Direct TV Channel 609).

The 2006 BIG EAST Championship Game will be played on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) before a live national television audience on ESPN2.
