Cunningham Leads Huskies In National Class Field

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (October 15, 2005) - The University of
Connecticut women's cross country team competed in the Penn State
National Invitational on Sunday morning, placing 22nd with 522 points.
Senior Niamh Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) led the Huskies in
this high competition level meet, finishing 36th with a time of 22:02.
Duke University, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, won the meet with 22
points. Providence, Tennessee, University of Pennsylvania and and Ohio
State rounded out the top-five. Shannon Rowbury, a senior
from Duke, came in first with a time of 20:34. Also
competing for the Huskies were junior Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.)
who placed 87th. Kate Vaughan (Bethel Park, Pa.) placed 119th,
Orlaith Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) took 122nd, Taylor Lebovich
(Old Tappan, N.J.) finished 158th, Keelan King (Scotia, N.Y.) placed
184th, and Rebecca McCollum (Monroe, Conn.) placed 188th. "It's
a reality check for us," said UConn distance coach, Kim McGreevy. "We
need to do a couple of different things in order to finish a few places higher,
but I was pleased with the toughness of our team. We ran tough against a
strong field of competition." The Huskies will be back in action again on
Oct. 22 at the Central Connecticut Mini Meet.
