Huskies Tie Greenwich Field Hockey Club in Exhibition Play
STORRS, CT
(August 24) -- Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Lauren Henderson
(Avondale Harare Zimbabwe) scored the University of Connecticut’s lone
goal as the Huskies played to a 1-1 deadlock with the Greenwich Field
Hockey Club Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports
Complex in Storrs, Conn.
Greenwich came out strong in the first half, fashioning a play that
resulted in a point-blank shot. However, Preseason BIG EAST Defensive
Player of the Year Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) made a great save to
preserve the scoreless tie. The Huskies’ best scoring chance in the
first half came with three minutes remaining. Henderson found herself
wide-open at the top of the circle and rifled the ball into the back
of the net. The goal was nullified though because Henderson was
outside of the circle when she took the shot.
However, Henderson would
not be denied again as she backhanded a blistering shot from the left side into
the lower right hand corner of the goal with 29:29 remaining in the second
half. Greenwich would answer though, as a Greenwich forward dribbled into the
circle and lofted a shot over the out-stretched arms of UConn goalie Melissa
Bostwick. Bostwick would allow no more damage in the half as she made a number
of tough saves to preserve the tie for Connecticut.
Today was the Huskies only
exhibition game as they look forward to the regular season which gets underway
next weekend in Storrs. The Huskies will host the UConn Field Hockey Classic
Saturday and Sunday as they will welcome Albany, Lafayette, and Lehigh to
campus. UConn will square-off against Lafayette at 11:30 am Saturday, August 30
and Lehigh at 11:30 am Sunday, August 31. All action will take place at the
George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
A non-profit organization, The Greenwich Field Hockey Club is based out of New
York City and is dedicated to the expansion of field hockey throughout North
America.
