STORRS, CT (September 7) -- The University of Connecticut field hockey team
was defeated, 2-1, by Penn State Sunday afternoon in State College, Pa. With the
loss, the Huskies fall to 2-1 on the season while the Nitany Lions, who played
in the national championship game in 2002, remain spotless at 3-0.
UConn came out strong to start things off, as junior Mary Jo Malone (Water
Mill, NY) notched an unassisted goal just 5:47 seconds into the game, giving the
Huskies a 1-0 advantage. The Husky defense held for the next 20 minutes, but
Karin Garp knotted the score at one with an unassisted tally of her own.
Just five minutes into the second stanza, Penn State forward Michele Rigby
punched in the game-winner off an assist from Mary Schaefer. Reigning BIG EAST
Defensive Player of the Week Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) was tested by the
Nittany Lion’s potent offensive attack, facing 12 shots (eight on goal) and
stopping six. The Husky offense could muster only five shots (four on goal) and
PSU goalie Annie Zinkavich made three saves.
UConn returns to action on Wednesday, September 10 to take on intrastate
rival Quinnipiac University at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in
Storrs. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
