Huskies Leave Cardinal Seeing Red

Boxscore(.pdf)

Norfolk, VA (September 13) – Senior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) scored two goals running her season tally to a team-high six, and junior Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) also notched two scores as the University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated Stanford, 4-0, in Norfolk, Virginia. With the victory, UConn improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Cardinal who received votes in the STX/NFHCA Division I poll, drops to 2-4.

Malone, who has played sensational in 2003, quickly scored an unassisted goal just three minutes into the affair. Malone then put the game out of reach about 17 minutes later, registering her second goal of the day at 19:24. The Husky defensive unit stymied Stanford’s offensive attack, not allowing the Cardinal a single shot in the second stanza, and holding Stanford to only two shots on the afternoon. UConn ran a potent offensive attack in the first half, registering 11 shots in the opening session.

UConn keeper Maureen Butler stopped the only shot she faced in earning her fourth shutout victory of the season. Ana Kravolec and Emily Zander split time in net for Stanford, each making one save.

Henderson’s first goal came on a penalty corner. Leigh Morrissette (Granby, CT) served the ball to Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, CT) who set it perfectly for Henderson to hit a bullet past Zander. Henderson also scored off an assist from Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) making the score 4-0.

UConn looks forward to tomorrow’s showdown with host school Old Dominion. ODU, which is ranked No. 6 in the land, will match-up with the Huskies Sunday at 1:00 pm.
