NORFOLK, VA (September 14) – Senior Mary Jo Malone (Water
Mill, NY) scored her fifth goal of the week and junior Lauren Henderson
(Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored a game-tying goal in the second half, but it
was not enough as No. 6 Old Dominion defeated the tenth-ranked University of
Connecticut field hockey team 4-2 in Norfolk, Virginia. Both squads are now 4-2
in 2003.
The Lady Monarchs played exceptionally on Sunday, but UConn
would not lie down. After falling behind 1-0 on a Katie Claxton score with 13:50
remaining in the first half, Malone scored a goal of her own, tying the score at
one a piece. ODU regained the lead when Chilly Banuelos scored again with 5:29
remainng in the stanza.
Henderson would answer though, as she hit a rocket into the
back of the net, tying the game at two with just under 30-minutes remaining.
However, ODU capitalized on its penalty corner advantage (17-5) and recaptured
the lead with a goal by Janelle Engle and then iced it with a score by Angie
Loy. Both goals came off of penalty corners.
Maureen Butler made a season-high eleven saves and Tina
Walker stopped six shots for the Lady Monarchs. ODU ran a potent offensive
attack, registering 23 shots while the Huskies were able to manage nine shots.
UConn returns home for its BIG EAST opener with Villanova on Sunday,
September 20. Game-time is set for 1:00 pm and will take place at the George J.
Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs.
