STORRS, CT (September 27) — Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Lauren Henderson
(Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored two goals, and teammate Cea Fong (Greenwich,
CT) added the first two goals of her career as the University of Connecticut
field hockey team trounced UMass 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman
Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the victory, UConn improves to 6-3 on the
campaign while UMass slips to 2-8.
UConn immediately took control of this contest, notching 11 shots and holding
UMass to only two shots. Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ) scored her first goal of the
season at 25:30. The sophomore Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection found a
seam in the Umass defense and dribbled untouched into point blank range where
she punched the ball through the five-hole, giving the Huskies a 1-0 advantage
they would not relinquish. UConn managed to light the lamp on its sixth and
final corner of the first half, with only nine seconds remaining. Junior Lauren
Henderson’s initial hit was blocked by the Massachusetts defense. Senior Laura
Thibodeau (Southbury, CT) controlled the rebound and dished to Henderson who
fired a bullet into the back of the net, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead they
would take into the locker room.
Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) increased her goal scoring streak to seven
games with a goal at the 48:00 mark, putting this one totally out of reach.
Puddle fed the ball into the circle where senior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) was
waiting. Stolle dished to Malone in front of the net where she stuffed it in
past keeper Christine Tocco. Fong’s two goals came at 61:08 and 66:25. Her
first tally from Kati Cavanagh (Norwalk, CT) was a pretty one. Cavanagh’s feed
sailed about waste high, but Fong adjusted in time to swat the ball in the back
of the net baseball style.
Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) stopped two shots en route to earning her sixth
shutout victory of the season. Tocco made seven saves for UMass.
UConn is back in action Wednesday, September 1 to take on Yale in New Haven.
Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
