New Haven, CT (October 1) – Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored her ninth and tenth goals of the season, and senior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) also notched two scores as the University of Connecticut field hockey team rolled to a 5-2 victory against Yale Wednesday night in New Haven, Conn. With the victory, UConn improves to 7-3, while Yale slips to 3-5.

Stolle got things started about ten minutes into the first session. The veteran forward found a seam in the Bulldog defense on the end line and struck a shot past Yale keeper Krissy Nesburg on the short-side and into the back of the net, as UConn took the 1-0 lead and ran with it. Seven minutes later the Huskies capitalized on a penalty corner. Senior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) served the ball to a waiting Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, CT) who set the ball perfectly for Henderson to hit one of her patented rockets off the back board extending the UConn lead to 2-0. Elizabeth Topp got Yale on the board with just 41 seconds left in the first half off an assist from Sarah Driscoll.

However, UConn put any hope of a comeback to bed as a stifling Husky defense led by Ostruzka, held Yale to only three shots in the second half and a potent UConn offense continued to dominate, scoring two more goals including a fast-break tally by Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ) with 13:50 remaining. Stolle’s second goal of the evening was the icing on the cake as she controlled a feed from Malone in the circle, was tripped by a Yale defender and sprawled out as she fired a shot into the back of the net.

Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) stopped two shots on the evening and Nesbrug made eight saves for Yale.  With her two assists Mary Jo Malone extended her scoring streak to seven games. 

UConn returns to action when they play host to New Hampshire Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs.
