STORRS, CT (October, 8) – Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree
Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored her 11th goal of the season
on the game’s first shot, but the Huskies could not make it hold up as the No.
13 University of Connecticut field hockey team was nipped 2-1 by No. 15 Boston
College Wednesday evening at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in
Storrs. With the loss, UConn slips to 8-4overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST. The
Eagles move to 9-3 and are the only remaining unbeaten team in the conference at
2-0.
Henderson got UConn on the board just 2:16 into the action.
The junior forward controlled the ball at midfield and dribbled to the top of
the circle where she flipped the ball over BC keeper Lauren Hill giving UConn a
quick 1-0 advantage. The Eagles responded just six minutes later. Eagle forward
Virginia Drozd rifled the ball into the circle, finding teammate Sara York, who
deflected it past Maureen Butler, knotting the score up at one. With just under
three minutes remaining in the first half, BC took the lead for good off a
rebound that was controlled and punched into the back of the net by Tara
Fernandes.
UConn was out shot 6-to-3 in the first stanza, but stormed
out of the gate in the second session. The Huskies out shot BC 10-to-3 in the
second half and had plenty of chances to tie it up. UConn’s best chance came
with 11:39 to go. Senior Laura Thibodeau (Southbury, CT) dribbled up the right
side and crossed the ball through the circle, finding a cutting Becky Helwig on
the far side. Helwig controlled the ball and fired a shot that clanged rudely
off the post.
UConn commences a three game road trip at Princeton. Game time is set for
1:00 p.m. in New Jersey.
