BOSTON, MA (October 15) – The No. 13 University of
Connecticut field hockey team pulled off another road upset, defeating No. 10
Northeastern 2-0 Wednesday evening on the strength of Mary Jo Malone’s (Water
Mill, NY) 12th goal of the season and Laura Puddle’s (London, England) second.
With the victory, UConn improves to 10-4 on the campaign while Northeastern
slips to 11-5. UConn defeated then No. 10 Princeton in New Jersey on Saturday.
Malone put UConn up for good at 25:39. The Senior forward
picked up a loose ball in Northeastern's end and dribbled ahead of the NU
defense. With only NU keeper Diana Nelson to beat, Malone fired a bullet from 20
yards out past Nelson giving UConn a 1-0 advantage it would take into halftime.
UConn played sensationally on the defensive end in the second
stanza, not allowing Northeastern to take a shot. That effort is exceptional
because NU is virtually unbeatable at home. Tonight’s loss was only NU’s fifth
at home since 2001. Puddle iced the game when she controlled a rebound and
punched it in the lower left corner to insure the victory.
With Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Maureen
Butler (Red Hook, NY) sidelined due to an injury, sophomore Melissa Bostwick
came up huge in this contest. Bostwick, who has only seen 14:51 of action in her
career at UConn, made three big saves en route to earning the shutout. Nelson
made nine saves for NU.
UConn concludes its three game road trip Sunday, October 19
with a match-up against BIG EAST foe Rutgers in Piscataway, NJ. Game time is set
for 1:00 p.m.
