STORRS, CT (October 18) – Senior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) scored one goal
and assisted on two others and Junior Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare,
Zimbabwe) lit the lamp twice as the University of Connecticut field hockey team
rolled to its third straight road victory with a 5-1 defeat of BIG EAST foe
Rutgers on Sunday in Piscataway, NJ. With the triumph, UConn improves to 11-4
overall, 2-1 in conference play, while Rutgers slips to 7-9, 2-2.
The Huskies peppered Rutgers for eight shots in the first session, and scored
three goals to put the game away early. Stolle got things started with 21:15
remaining in the first half as she found a seam in the Rutgers defense and took
it in for an unassisted goal, putting the Huskies up for good. Henderson scored
an unassisted tally of her own just 18 seconds later giving UConn a 2-0
advantage. Sophomore Laura Puddle (London, England) effectively iced the game
with 17:34 left in the first stanza when she took a feed from Stolle and found
the back of the net.
Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) got in on the scoring with her 13th goal of
2003, thanks to another assist from the generous Stolle. Henderson put the
cherry on top of the Huskies’ Sunday with a goal off assists from Abby Ostruzka
(Riverside, CT) and Lyndsay Thomson (Newburyport, MA) on a penalty corner. The
goal was Henderson’s team-leading 14th on the season, and league leading fourth
in BIG EAST play.
Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) and Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, CA) split time
in net for Connecticut and combined to make three saves. Aga Siemiginowska
stopped six shots for Rutgers.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, October 22 to take-on Boston
University in Storrs. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
