SYRACUSE, NY (October 26) -- Junior All-BIG EAST selection Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored UConn’s two goals, running her season total to a BIG EAST leading 17, lifting the No. 11 University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over league foe Syracuse, in New York. The win, UConn’s 10th over the Orange Women in the last 11 games, improves the Huskies’ record to 13-4, 3-1 in BIG EAST play. Syracuse slips to 6-10, 1-4. Sunday’s victory guarantees the Huskies a spot in this year’s BIG EAST Tournament November 7-9 in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Henderson put UConn up 1-0 on a penalty corner at the 23:18 mark of the first half. Senior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) served the ball to reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, CT) who set the ball for Henderson to hit one of her patented missiles past a lunging Betsy Wagner. However, Syracuse would not lie down, as Ashley Fry crossed a centering pass to a cutting Ann Marie Guglieri who stuffed the ball past Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) knotting the score at one.

The Huskies answered though, with time winding down in the first stanza. Senior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) struck a centering pass towards the ‘Cuse goal where both Malone and Henderson were a step ahead of the defense. Malone controlled the ball and slipped it to Henderson who punched it into the net putting the Huskies up for good.

UConn out shot Syracuse 13-to-5 on the afternoon and held a 6-to-2 advantage on penalty corners. Butler made four saves for the Huskies including three in the second half. Wagner stopped five shots for Syracuse.

UConn finishes the season with an impressive 6-2 record on the road. The two losses came at the hands of No. 7 Penn State, and No. 9 Old Dominion.

The Huskies return to action Wednesday, October 29th for an intrastate match up with Fairfield at 4:00 p.m. in Storrs.
