STORRS, CT (October 29) -- Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) tallied four first half goals, and Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) notched two goals and added two assists as the #11 University of Connecticut field hockey team stormed past Fairfield 8-0 on Wednesday evening at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the victory, UConn’s sixth in a row, the Huskies improve to 14-4 on the campaign, while the Stags slip to 6-12.

UConn’s eight goals were the most it has scored since 1999, the last time the Huskies made a trip to the final four. Connecticut defeated Quinnipiac 8-0 on October 24, 1999.

The Huskies bolted out of the gate and never looked back in this one. Malone got UConn on the board early in the first half with a goal at the 1:50 mark. Junior Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ) fed the ball into the middle of the circle and found a cutting Malone on the doorstep. Malone stuffed the ball in the back of the net giving UConn a lead it would not relinquish. Henderson scored the Huskies next four goals, two off penalty corners, only about seven minutes apart from each other to give the Huskies a 5-0 edge.

Malone and Laura Puddle (London, England) added a couple more first half goals and senior Lyndsay Thomson (Newburyport, MA) capped the scoring for UConn with the first goal of her career.

Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) and Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, CA) split the net-minding duties for UConn. Bostwick stopped the only shot she faced. Lauren Thomas made 13 saves for Fairfield.

UConn out-shot the Stags 33-to-four on the night, including 21-to-two in the first half.

The Huskies return to action Saturday, November 1 for their last regular season game against Providence at 1:00 p.m. The Hartford Courant and Career Bulider.com will sponsor senior salute, following the game.
