STORRS, CT (November 1) -- Junior Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) notched two goals and Senior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) also scored twice and added an assist as the University of Connecticut field hockey team thumped Providence 4-0 in the regular season finale for both teams. UConn concludes the regular season with a 15-4 overall mark, 4-1 in the BIG EAST, while Providence finishes its season at 8-11, 0-5.

Henderson’s two goals ran her season total to 23. Henderson finishes the regular season as the leader in both goals scored and points in BIG EAST play with eight and 16 respectively. Henderson is now just 18 goals behind Tracey Fuchs, UConn’s all-time leader in goals scored.

UConn, winners of 10 of its last 11 games, struck early in this one as Henderson got the Huskies on the board just 3:34 into the contest. After perfect pushes and stick-stops by Malone and Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, CT) on UConn’s first penalty corner of the day, Henderson fired a shot into the lower left corner and UConn never looked back. Just 20 seconds later, the Huskies were on the attack again, as Malone collected a loose ball in front of the net and stuffed it in, giving the Huskies a 2-0 edge.

Henderson’s final goal of the regular season was one of the prettiest of the year. Freshman midfielder Meagan Hoffman (West Granby, CT) crossed the ball through the circle, leading Henderson perfectly. Henderson laid-out and swiped a shot while she was in midair, into the upper left-hand corner icing the game for the Huskies.

Malone, who will compete on the North Team in the 2003 NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star Game after the season, scored her 17th goal of the season thanks to Laura Puddle’s (London, England) fourth assist of 2003.

Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) fittingly recorded a shutout in her final regular season game, making seven acrobatic saves.

The Huskies will square-off with #4 seeded Rutgers in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on November 7 at 6:00 p.m. All action takes place on the campus of Boston College in Chestnut Hill MA. Friday’s winners will advance to the final on Sunday November 9 at 2:00 p.m.
