STORRS, CT (November 3) -- Senior Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) and junior preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Lauren
Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) made it a clean-sweep for the University
of Connecticut filed hockey team in the final weekly accolades awarded by The
BIG EAST. Butler was named Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in
2003, and Henderson earned the award for the second consecutive week.
With the victory over Providence the Huskies wrapped up the BIG EAST Regular
Season title, and garnered the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament this
weekend. The Huskies have now won seven of the last eight BIG EAST Regular
Season titles, and UConn is the defending BIG EAST Tournament Champion.
Butler led the Husky defense to two shutout victories last week. Butler made
one save in 35:00 minutes of action in UConn’s 8-0 victory over instate rival
Fairfield on Wednesday. Saturday, Butler made seven big saves in a 4-0 victory
over league foe Providence.
Henderson had a sensational week on the offensive end, scoring four goals in
the victory over Fairfield, and then notching two goals in the victory over the
Friars. Henderson has scored 23 goals in 2003 and a league leading eight in BIG
EAST play. Butler boasts a 14-4 record this season, and has earned eight shutout
victories en route to posting a goals against average of 0.95.
#1 seeded UConn will square-off with #4 seeded Rutgers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday
November 7. All action takes place at Alumni Field in Chestnut Hill, MA, on the
campus of Boston College.
