STORRS, CT (November 16) -- Wake Forest forward Kelly Dostal scored three goals, the first coming off a penalty stroke at 13:45, to lead defending NCAA Champion Wake Forest past the University of Connecticut field hockey team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the victory, the Demon Deacons advance to the NCAA Division I Final Four, while the Huskies’ season ends with a 17-6 record.  Wake is now 20-1 in 2003.

Dostal scored the game-winner after the Demon Deacons were awarded a penalty stroke at 13:45. Dostal flipped the ball into the lower left-hand corner, just past the stick of UConn keeper Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY). Wake increased its lead to 2-0 after Dostal struck a shot on a penalty corner into the back of the net at 18:12.

Wake did not allow UConn to take a shot in the first half, and UConn would only muster two shots for the entire game against the nation’s #1 ranked defense. Dostal added a third goal off a penalty corner at 41:49.

Butler made four saves in her final game as a Husky, and Katie Ridd was not forced to make a save. However, UConn did force the Demon Deacons to make a defensive save, as junior Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) controlled a pass in the circle and rolled it towards the net. However, Wake sweeper Claire Laubach was waiting on the doorstep, and punched the ball out of danger’s way.

UConn’s trip to the Quarterfinal was its sixth in the past eight years.
