Six Huskies Earn 2003 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region Honors

STORRS, CT (November 17) -- Senior goalkeeper Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY), junior forward Lauren Henderson (Avondale, Harare, Zimbabwe), senior forward Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY), senior forward Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT), sophomore midfielder Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ), and junior back Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, CT) have been named to the 2003 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region Team for their efforts in leading the Huskies to a 17-6 record, a BIG EAST Regular Season title, and a spot in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal.

Butler, Henderson, Malone, and Stolle were named to the All-Mideast Region First Team, while Helwig and Ostruzka earned mention on the All-Mideast Region Second Team.

Butler tallied nine shutouts in net for UConn, and boasted a career-low 1.15 goals against average en route to earning a 16-6 record in 2003. Henderson led the Huskies and the BIG EAST in points (58) and goals (28) and was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. Henderson is now in second place on UConn’s all-time points and goals scored lists. Malone enjoyed the best year of her career, notching 19 goals and adding 10 assists for 48 points, and Stolle led the Huskies with 14 assists.

Helwig played solidly at the midfield position all year long, starting every game and tallying four goals and two assists for 10 points. Ostruzka anchored a stingy UConn defense that allowed just 1.09 goals per game, which was third in the nation. Ostruzka also added 10 assists in 2003.
