STORRS, CT (December 5) — University of
Connecticut field hockey coach Nancy Stevens was named the Dita/NFHCA Mideast
Regional Coach of the Year today by the National Field Hockey Coaches
Association. Stevens previously garnered the honor in both 1996 and 1998.
Stevens led the Huskies to a 17-6 record this fall as UConn advanced to the
NCAA Quarterfinals where the team lost to eventual national champion Wake
Forest. UConn captured the 2003 BIG EAST regular season championship along the
way and for her work was recognized as the league’s coach of the year. Stevens’
UConn teams have now won eight regular season BIG EAST titles and six tournament
crowns while she has been named coach of the year five times. Her teams at both
UConn and Northwestern (1981-89) have appeared in a combined five NCAA
semifinals and 15 NCAA quarterfinals. Stevens’ 384 career wins rank second
all-time and during the course of the 2003 season, Stevens also won her
milestone 200th career game at UConn with a 2-1 victory over Syracuse on Oct.
