UConn Field Hockey Opens Season With 7-0 Shutout of Sacred Heart

STORRS, Conn. (August 28, 2004) — The Connecticut field hockey team opened the regular season Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex with a 7-0 shutout of Sacred Heart in the first game of the 2004 UConn Field Hockey Classic.

Six different players scored for the Huskies, led by freshman Lizzy Peijs (Breda, Holland) who netted a game-best two scores.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 26-6 all-time in regular season openers and 2-1 all-time vs. Sacred Heart.

Peijs put the Huskies up for good just 6:21 into the contest when she blasted a shot following a feed from Brianna Clark (Marshfield, Mass.) to make the score 1-0.

The Huskies (1-0) added four more goals in the first half including Peijs second tally at the 10:35 mark. Also registering first-half goals were Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe), Nicole Harmony (Palmyra, Pa.) and Becky Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.).

The second half saw the teams play a scoreless opening 27:41 before Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.) increased the UConn advantage to 6-0 on a goal assisted by Lindsay Belli (Glenwood, N.J.).

Cea Fong (Greenwich, Conn.) rounded out the game’s scoring at the 67:47 mark of the second half.

Connecticut’s Belli and Laura Puddle (London, England) each finished the game with two assists.

For the game, the Huskies out-shot Sacred Heart 26-7 and attempted 11 penalty corners while limiting Sacred Heart to four.

UConn goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) made two saves en route to her first shutout of the season and the second of her career.

In the day’s other game, American also earned a shutout by blanking Albany (N.Y.) 4-0.

The UConn Field Hockey Classic wraps up play tomorrow with UConn facing American at 11:30 a.m. and Sacred Heart battling Albany at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
