UConn Field Hockey Beats American 3-0 For Second Straight Shutout

STORRS, Conn. (August 29, 2004) — Three different players scored goals to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 3-0 win over American on Sunday afternoon at the UConn Field Hockey Classic.

The shutout marked the Huskies second straight to open the season and improves their overall mark to 2-0. American drops to 1-1 with the loss.

The two teams remained scoreless until the 25:59 mark of the first half when Katie Cavanagh (Norwalk, Conn.) scored the first goal of her career to give Connecticut the 1-0 advantage.

Meagan Hoffman (West Granby, Conn.) blasted a shot from the right shot of the arc to increase the UConn lead to 2-0 with 6:18 remaining in the first half.

Laura Puddle (London, England) pushed a shot past American goalkeeper Allison Fayfich at 57:37 to account for the final goal of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) finished with one save en route to the shutout, while Fayfich made 10 saves in the loss for American.

In the day’s other game, Sacred Heart held on to defeat Albany (N.Y.) 4-3.

The Huskies (2-0) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they host Penn State beginning at 12:00 p.m. (ET) at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
