Lauren Henderson and Abby Ostruzka Named BIG EAST Field Hockey Players of the Week

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 4, 2004) — Senior Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, Conn.) have been named as the BIG EAST Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the BIG EAST Conference announced today.

Henderson became UConn’s career leader in both goals and points last week with her current 74-game totals of 83 goals and 181 points. Her totals moved her past former Husky standout Tracey Fuchs’ previous best marks of 79 goals and 178 points.

Henderson tallied a pair of goals in an 8-1 win over Yale and followed with a three-goal effort in a 6-0 shutout of New Hampshire last week.

For the season, Henderson boasts 17 goals and 35 points. She has notched at least one goal in each of the last four games and nine of 11 games overall. In addition she has posted five multiple goal games this season.

Ostruzka is honored after anchoring another solid performance by UConn’s defensive unit which allowed only one goal and six shots over two games last week. For the season, the Huskies’ defense has allowed only four goals in 11 games.

Offensively, Ostruzka notched an assist in each of UConn’s two wins last week.

The weekly conference honor marks the ninth of Henderson’s career, while Ostruzka is recognized for the second time in her career.

The Huskies, who have won each of their first 11 games this season, are off to their best start since the 1999 season when they opened 23-0 and advanced to the national semifinals.

No. 6 UConn returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 6 when they travel to face No. 9 Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
