No. 6 Field Hockey Falls To No. 9 Northeastern 1-0

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 13, 2004) —
The No. 6 University of Connecticut field hockey team lost its first game of the season to No. 9 Northeastern in penalty strokes 4-2 on Wednesday night at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie over 70 regulation and 30 overtime minutes before Northeastern bested UConn 4-2 in second round of penalty strokes.

UConn drops to 13-1 overall with the loss, while Northeastern improves to 13-2.

Each team had numerous chances throughout, but kept coming away empty as UConn’s Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) made five saves on 13 shots and Northeastern’s Diana Nelson made 11 saves on 21 UConn shots.

The two teams finished tied in the first five-player penalty stroke period at 1-1 to force the second five-player set, which saw Northeastern connect on its first four opportunities. The clincher was provided by Sarah Eckoff, who finished 2-of-2 in the penalty stroke phase.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they host BIG EAST foe Rutgers at the George J. Sherman family Sports Complex beginning at 1:00 pm.
