UConn Advances To BIG EAST Field Hockey Final With 2-1 Win Over Villanova in
Semifinals; Will Face Boston College In Final
SYRACUSE,
N.Y. – Junior Laura
Puddle (London, England) scored the game-winning goal and
added an assist as the University of Connecticut field hockey team
advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game with a 2-1 victory over
Villanova in the conference semifinal on Friday evening at J.S. Coyne
Field in Syracuse, N.Y.
UConn advances to the
championship for the third time in the past three seasons and improves to a 19-1
overall record with the win, while Villanova falls to 11-8 and are now 0-4
against Connecticut all-time in BIG EAST Tournament games.
The final will be played
on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against Boston College, which defeated Syracuse 1-0 in
the other semifinal. The winner of the championship
receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
After a scoreless first
half, UConn took a 1-0 lead one minute and 20 seconds into the second half as
sophomore Meagan Hoffmann (West Granby, Conn.) notched her fifth goal of
the season off a feed from Puddle.
The Wildcats tied the game
as Sarah Way capitalized on a penalty stroke opportunity with 23:06 left to
play, but UConn battled back and regained the lead on a goal by Puddle from
Lauren Hennessey (Oceanport, N.J.) just 2:12 later.
Melissa Bostwick
(San Diego, Calif.) made four saves in net for the Huskies to earn the victory
and Erin Scott stopped five shots in the loss for Villanova.
