UConn Beats Boston College 4-1 In
BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship Game

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2004) — The No. 1 seed University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated No. 3 seed Boston College 4-1 in the 2004 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Field on the campus of Syracuse University.

The BIG EAST Tournament Championship marks UConn’s first since 2002 and is the seventh in the program’s history.  Connecticut owns an all-time mark of 19-8 in BIG EAST Tournament games, the best among all conference institutions.

The win improves the Huskies’ overall mark to 20-1, while Boston College falls to 17-5 following the loss.

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) gave UConn the lead at 1-0 on a blast at the 32:42 mark of the opening half.  The goal was set up by sophomore Meagan Hoffman (West Granby, Conn.) and marked Henderson’s team-leading 29th of the season.

Henderson increased UConn’s advantage to 2-0 with her 30th goal of the season at the 44:55 mark of the second half.

Junior Becky Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) added her eighth and ninth goals of the season at the 52:34 and 67:16 marks to round out UConn’s scoring.

Boston College avoided the shutout when Kerri Kulesza scored with just 53 seconds remaining in the contest.

Henderson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship for the second time in her career.  Henderson was previously named the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player in 2002.

The Huskies will now await their seed and pairing for the 2004 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament, which will be announced on College Sports Television’s NCAA Field Hockey Selection Show on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
