Five UConn
Field Hockey Players Named To
All-Mideast Region Squad
Senior Lauren Henderson earns All-Region status for
fourth consecutive season
STORRS, Conn. (November 16, 2004) - Five members of
the University Connecticut field hockey team were named to the 2004 STX/NFHCA
Division I All-Mideast Region First Team, which was announced today.
Seniors Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and Abby Ostruzka
(Riverside, Conn.) were joined by juniors Melissa Bostwick (San Diego,
Calif.), Becky Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Laura Puddle
(London, England) on the squad. All five players are now eligible to be named to
the 2004 STX/NFHCA Division I All-America Team.
Henderson, the two-time defending BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, became
UConn’s career leader in both goals and points during her senior season. She
finished her collegiate career with a total of 97 goals and 213 points.
Henderson also tied the UConn single-season scoring record with 31 goals during
her senior campaign. She has been named to the All-Mideast Region squad in each
of her four seasons at Connecticut.
Ostruzka was previously honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year
after leading a UConn defense that ranked first nationally and allowed only 13
goals over 22 games this season. Ostruzka ranked second on the squad with 12
assists and earned All-Mideast Region status for the second consecutive season.
Bostwick posted a career-best 11 shutouts while allowing a national-best 0.58
goals per game. She also led the nation with a .837 save percentage.
Helwig, a first-team All-BIG EAST choice, was named All-Mideast Region for the
second straight season after posting nine goals and four assists.
Puddle, another first-team All-BIG EAST choice, earned All-Mideast Region status
for the first time after tallying 14 goals and a team-best 16 assists during her
junior campaign.
Senior back April Cornell (Ninevah, N.Y.) and
freshman forward Lizzy Peijs (Breda, Holland) earned second team All-Mideast
Region status.
The Huskies finished the 2004 season 20-2 overall and won both the BIG EAST
Regular Season and Tournament titles. |
