STORRS, Conn. (November 16, 2004) - Five members of the University Connecticut field hockey team were named to the 2004 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region First Team, which was announced today.

Seniors Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, Conn.) were joined by juniors Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.), Becky Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Laura Puddle (London, England) on the squad. All five players are now eligible to be named to the 2004 STX/NFHCA Division I All-America Team.

Henderson, the two-time defending BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, became UConn’s career leader in both goals and points during her senior season. She finished her collegiate career with a total of 97 goals and 213 points. Henderson also tied the UConn single-season scoring record with 31 goals during her senior campaign. She has been named to the All-Mideast Region squad in each of her four seasons at Connecticut.

Ostruzka was previously honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year after leading a UConn defense that ranked first nationally and allowed only 13 goals over 22 games this season. Ostruzka ranked second on the squad with 12 assists and earned All-Mideast Region status for the second consecutive season.

Bostwick posted a career-best 11 shutouts while allowing a national-best 0.58 goals per game. She also led the nation with a .837 save percentage.

Helwig, a first-team All-BIG EAST choice, was named All-Mideast Region for the second straight season after posting nine goals and four assists.

Puddle, another first-team All-BIG EAST choice, earned All-Mideast Region status for the first time after tallying 14 goals and a team-best 16 assists during her junior campaign.

Senior back April Cornell (Ninevah, N.Y.) and freshman forward Lizzy Peijs (Breda, Holland) earned second team All-Mideast Region status.

The Huskies finished the 2004 season 20-2 overall and won both the BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles.
