Seniors Lauren Henderson and Abby Ostruzka earn First Team
Status
STORRS, Conn. (December 1, 2004) — Four members of the
University of Connecticut field hockey team have been named to the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America Teams,
which were released recently.
Seniors Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimababwe) and
Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, Conn.) earned first team status. Junior
Becky Helwig (Basking Ridge, Conn.) was a second team choice
while junior goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.)
was a third-team selection.
Henderson, the two-time defending BIG EAST Offensive Player of the
Year, became UConn’s career leader in both goals and points during her
senior season. She finished her collegiate career with a total of 97
goals and 213 points. Henderson also tied the UConn single-season
scoring record with 31 goals during her senior campaign. She has been
named to the All-Mideast Region squad in each of her four seasons at
Connecticut. She is a two-time first team All-America choice, the 10th
multiple All-America choice in UConn history.
Ostruzka was previously honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of
the Year after leading a UConn defense that ranked first nationally
and allowed only 13 goals over 22 games this season. Ostruzka ranked
second on the squad with 12 assists and earned All-Mideast Region
status for the second consecutive season.
Helwig, a first-team All-BIG EAST choice, was named All-Mideast Region
for the second straight season after posting nine goals and four
assists.
