STORRS, Conn. (June 16, 2005) -
University of Connecticut field hockey senior Abby Ostruzka (Riverside, Conn.) has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Third Team, which was announced today.

Ostruzka becomes the fourth UConn field hockey player in the program’s history to be recognized with Academic All-America status as Wendy Brady (1997/second team), Amy Herz (2001/third team) and Diane Madl (1989/third team) were previously honored.

A first-team All-America selection and the 2004 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, Ostruzka boasts a 3.8 grade point average in special education.

Ostruzka was the leader of UConn’s defense, which was ranked No. 1 nationally in 2004, after allowing an average of just 0.57 goals per game to its opponents over 22 contests. The Huskies posted 12 shutouts en route to claiming the BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles.

A factor on the offensive end as well, Ostruzka handed out 12 assists which ranked second on the squad and 12th nationally.

Ostruzka is a four-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad choice, a two-time All-Mideast Region selection, three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and earned back-to-back First Team All-BIG EAST mention.

Ostruzka finished her UConn career with three goals and 22 assists, which is tied for 13th most in UConn career annals.
