UConn Field Hockey Blasts Maine 7-0
Huskies close out season-opening homestand with second straight win

STORRS, Conn. (August 28, 2005)
- The University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated Maine 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.

With the victory Connecticut improves to 2-0 overall and was victorious in its first two games of the regular season for the third consecutive year. Maine drops to 1-1 overall following the loss.

After the two teams battled to a scoreless draw for the opening 16:29 of the contest, UConn opened up a 2-0 advantage off the strength of a pair of goals that were scored in less than a three-minute span and were both set up by penalty corners.

Freshman back Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim, Germany) netted her first career goal off a feed from Meagan Hoffmann (West Granby, Conn.) at the 16:29 mark of the first half. Sophomore Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) added a scoring tally of her own just 150 seconds later as she scored off a blast that was set up by Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) to increase the Connecticut margin to 2-0.

Freshman Lindsey Leck (Allentown, Pa.) upped UConn’s lead to 3-0 with her first collegiate goal at the 23:06 mark of the opening period. Helwig added a blast at 27:09 and Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.) registered her third goal of the season with 43 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Huskies a 5-0 margin at intermission.

Hoffmann and Peijs added second-half goals to round out the game’s scoring.

UConn goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) made three saves en route to her first shutout of the season.

The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4 when they travel to face Penn State beginning at 12:00 p.m. (ET) in State College, Pa.
