Four-Goal First Half Lifts UConn Field Hockey Past Princeton 4-2

PRINCETON, N.J. (September 11, 2005)
- The University of Connecticut field hockey team erupted for four goals in the opening 27:40 as it cruised to a 4-2 win at Princeton on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) led the Huskies’ early offensive attack as she recorded a team-best two goals in the win, each of which came within the first 17:51 of play.

The win marks UConn’s second straight and improves its mark to 4-1 overall on the season. Princeton falls to 1-3 following the loss.

Helwig’s first goal came via a back-handed shot 8:17 into the contest. Princeton responded at 11:49 on a goal by Kristin Schwab to knot the score at 1-1.

Connecticut claimed the lead for good on Helwig’s second tally at 17:51, her third goal of the season. Sophomore Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) added her fifth goal of the season off a feed from Laura Puddle (London, England) to increase the UConn advantage to 3-1 at 26:02.

Lindsay Leck (Clarksburg, N.J.) scored UConn’s final goal just under two minutes later at the 27:40 mark. Princeton added a goal at 45:18 by Hilary Schmidt to account for the final margin.

Connecticut out-shot Princeton for the game 13-12. The Tigers attempted nine penalty corners to the Huskies seven.

UConn returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when it plays host to New Hampshire beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
