STORRS, Conn. (September 14, 2005)
- The University of Connecticut field hockey team exploded for six goals in the opening 35 minutes as it cruised to an 8-0 win over New Hampshire on Wednesday night at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.

Sophomore Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.) sparked the first-half scoring frenzy with three goals, while Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) posted a pair of goals in the win.

The victory marks UConn’s third straight and improves its overall mark on the season to 5-1. New Hampshire slips to 3-4 following the loss. The shutout marks the Huskies’ third in the last five games.

UConn just missed connecting on several scoring opportunities early in the contest before Galuski got the Huskies on the scoreboard with her fifth goal of the season at 4:28. Galuski tipped in a setup from Laura Puddle (London, England) and Katie Cavanagh (Norwalk, Conn.) to account for the game’s first score.

Cavanagh increased the UConn advantage to 2-0 as she put away her first goal of the season at 14:05 of the first half. Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) followed by registering her sixth goal of the season on a penalty stroke at 21:59 to make the score 4-0.

Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) added to the first-half offensive outburst with a blast off a feed from Peijs to make the margin 4-0. Galuski added back-to-back goals over the final 5:19 of the opening half to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead at intermission.

Helwig added her second goal of the game at 38:57 to make the score 7-0 off assists from Meagan Hoffmann (West Granby, Conn.) and Peijs.

UConn returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when it plays host to Villanova in the BIG EAST opener for both teams beginning at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
