PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 14, 2005) - Connecticut's Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) this week's BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, was named NCAA Division I Player of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tuesday.

Helwig was named Preseason BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year by the league's head coaches.  The senior midfielder made significant defensive efforts in UConn’s 1-0 overtime win over Quinnipiac and in its 4-2 win at Princeton.

She is ranked among the conference leaders in goals (three) and assists (two).

Helwig is a member of a UConn team that is ranked No. 11 in the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association national poll released Sept. 13.

The ECAC is compiled of colleges and universities located in the northeastern region of the United States.
