No. 15 UConn Field Hockey Hands Massachusetts

STORRS, Conn. (September
24, 2005) - Senior Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and
sophomore Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) each scored goals to
lead the No. 15 University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 2-1
win over Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman
Family Sports Complex.
With the victory UConn improves
to 6-3 overall while Massachusetts slips to 3-7 following the loss.
UConn (6-3) had a goal disallowed with 22:07 remaining in the first
half because it was shot too high, but Helwig responded with her
seventh goal of the season off a feed from Laura Puddle
(London, England), with 4:13 remaining in the first half to give the
Huskies a 1-0 advantage at the intermission.
Peijs added her seventh score of the season on a penalty stroke at
67:16 to increase UConn’s advantage to 2-0.
Massachusetts got to within one goal on Katelyn Orlando’s third goal
of the season, which was set up by an assist from Kristina DoRossario
at 67:54.
UConn out-shot Massachusetts for the contest 19-5 and attempted 11
penalty corners while limiting the Minutewomen to three attempts.
UConn goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) made
three saves in the win, while UMass keeper Becky Letourneau turned
away nine UConn shots in the loss.
UConn returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when it travels to take
on Yale in New Haven beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
