No. 15 UConn Field Hockey Falls in Penalty Strokes at No. 14 Michigan 2-1

- The No. 15 University of Connecticut field hockey team came up just
short as it was defeated in penalty strokes at No. 14 Michigan on
Sunday afternoon.
The two teams were tied at 1-1 after 100 minutes of play, sending the
game to the penalty stroke phase. Michigan connected on each of its
first three attempts, while Connecticut scored on only one penalty
stroke to seal the win for the Wolverines.
The loss drops the Huskies to 9-4 overall while Michigan improves to
8-6 on the season. The game marked UConn’s third straight versus a
ranked opponent and represented the Huskies’ first loss in that span.
Nikki Harmony (Palmyra, Pa.) netted her third goal of the
season to give UConn a 1-0 lead 14:59 into the contest off a feed from
Lindsay Leck (Clarksburg, N.J.). Connecticut held that
advantage until the 22:36 mark, when Michigan’s Lori Hillman connected
to knot the game at 1-1.
The next 77:24 were scoreless as each team had numerous opportunities
but came away empty. Both teams attempted 15 shots in the game while
Connecticut managed to fight off 13 penalty corner attempts by
Michigan.
Kara Lentz put away the game-winning penalty stroke for the
Wolverines. Laura Puddle (London, England) was the lone member
of the UConn squad to score on her penalty stroke try.
UConn goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) allowed
one goal while making six saves in the loss.
No. 15 UConn will return to action with its fourth straight game
versus a ranked opponent when it travels to Boston on Wednesday, Oct.
12 to meet No. 11 Northeastern at 3:00 p.m. (ET).
