No. 12 UConn Field Hockey Defeats

5-0 on Senior Day
Huskies clinch share of BIG EAST Regular Season crown for
fourth consecutive season

STORRS, Conn. (October 29, 2005) —
The No. 12 University of Connecticut field hockey
team claimed a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season title for the fourth straight
season with its 5-0 win over Providence on Saturday afternoon at the George J.
Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The regular season championship marks UConn’s ninth title in the last 10
seasons. UConn finishes the regular season 14-5 overall and 4-1 in BIG EAST
games. The No. 2 seed Huskies will open the postseason on Friday, Nov. 4 when
they face No. 3 seed Louisville in the semifinals of the 2005 BIG EAST
Championship at Rutgers beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
The game also featured the Hartford Courant CareerBuilder.com Senior Salute as
five UConn seniors, Rebecca Helwig
(Basking Ridge, N.J.), Melissa Bostwick
(San Diego, Calif.), Laura Puddle (London,
England), Kati Cavanagh (Norwalk, Conn.)
and Cea Fong (Greenwich, Conn.) played the
last regular season home game of their careers.
Sophomore Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.)
got the Huskies on the board with the game’s only goal in the first half at
14:41, her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Freshman Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim,
Germany) scored off a penalty corner try at 38:23 to increase the Huskies’
margin to 2-0 - off assists by Lizzy Peijs
(Venlo, Holland) and Helwig.
Helwig added her 11th tally of the season at 46:29 before Galuski added her 14th
goal off a feed from Lauren Aird (Harare,
Zimbabwe).
Fong rounded out the game’s scoring with her fourth career goal on a back-handed
shot to account for the final 5-0 margin.
For the game, UConn out-shot Providence 17-4 and attempted six penalty corners
to the Friars’ two.
The Huskies open the postseason on Friday, Nov. 4 when they travel to Rutgers to
face Louisville in the semifinals of the 2005 BIG EAST Championship beginning at
7:00 p.m. (ET).
