Six UConn Field Hockey Players Named to
2005 All-BIG EAST Squads
Senior Laura Puddle and
freshman Jennifer Kleinhans earn first team status
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 3, 2005) –
The co-BIG EAST regular season champion
University of Connecticut field hockey team had six players named to the 2005
All-BIG EAST Teams, including two first-team selections, which were announced
Thursday.
The Huskies were represented by true freshman
Jennifer Kleinhans (Manheim, Germany) and senior Laura Puddle
(London, England) on the all-conference team. Puddle earned All-BIG
EAST First Team honors in 2004 as well.
Kleinhans started in each of UConn’s 19 games during here
freshman season at back. She guided a UConn defensive unit that limited
opponents to just 26 goals over 19 games and registered five shutouts. The
freshman also recorded five goals and two assists and was a key contributor in
the Huskies’ penalty corner sets.
Puddle enjoyed a solid senior campaign which saw her excel
as the team’s primary playmaker. She handed out a team-best 13 assists, which
ranked 13th nationally.

Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.), junior Kristin Galuski
(Latham, N.Y.) and sophomore Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) rounded out
UConn’s second team All-BIG EAST selections.
Helwig ranked second on the team at the conclusion of the
regular season with 11 goals and 27 points. She also recorded a team-high four
defensive saves during her senior campaign.
Bostwick currently boasts 17 career shutouts, including
four this season. She ranks first in the BIG EAST in shutouts and in goals
against average (1.33).
Galuski had a breakthrough season as a junior which saw her
total a team-leading 14 goals and 30 points. She ranks fifth among BIG EAST
leaders in goals (14) and among the top-10 players nationally.
Peijs built on a solid freshman season with a team-high 30
points and 11 goals during her sophomore season. She has started all 40 games
of her UConn career.
BIG EAST field hockey regular season co-champion Villanova
took home three of the four conference postseason honors, as voted on by the
league’s six head coaches who could not vote for players on their own team.
Villanova head coach Joanie Q. Milhous earned her second
career BIG EAST Coach of the Year honor. Villanova’s Rory Rogers (Sr., F)
earned Co-Offensive Player of the Year, along with Louisville junior midfielder
Jessica Javelet. Wildcat junior midfielder Lauren Campanelli, was named BIG
EAST Defensive Player of the Year and Syracuse Heather Hess rounded out the
conference’s top honors as the 2005 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.
Milhous, who also won Coach of the Year in 1999, led her
team to a 14-4 overall record, 4-1 against league competition, and its first BIG
EAST regular season championship in school history. She also guided the
Wildcats to their first ever national ranking. Their high-water mark on the
season came Sept. 27 when they were ranked No. 15 in the STX/NFHCA national
poll.
Jessica Javelet, a two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of
the Week honoree, led the nation in scoring with 30 goals, 14 assists for 74
points in 2005. The junior midfielder contributed eight goals and two assists
for 18 points against league opponents to highlight a U of L offense that led
the conference in scoring with 26 goals and 22 assists in its first season as a
member of the BIG EAST.
Rogers was third in goals scored in conference games with
five and had the fourth-highest total in all games with 17. She also tallied
eight assists for a total of 42 points on the season. The senior forward tied
with Javelet and UConn’s Lizzy Peijs for the league lead in game-winning goals
with five. Rogers was also a two-time winner of the BIG EAST Offensive Player of
the Week in 2005.
Campanelli, who switched to a defensive midfielder halfway
through the season, anchored a Villanova unit that did not break against some of
the nation’s top offenses. The VU defense allowed 1.94 goals per game, which was
second in the conference. The junior midfielder and Offensive Player of the Week
on Sept. 19 has contributed on both sides of the field by aiding the Wildcat
offense with seven goals and 11assists, many of which came on penalty corners.
Hess’s 102 saves in Syracuse’s 19 games was second-best
among conference goalkeepers. The freshman showed her improvement by posting two
shutouts in the last four games of the season. Hess started 18 of the Orange’s
19 total contests, clocking 1211:56 in front of the cage, while allowing 2.08
goals per game. Hess was the only goalie to earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of
the Week honors in 2005.
Louisville and Villanova both have three players on the
11-player All-BIG EAST First Team list. Along with Rogers and Campanelli,
Villanova junior forward Megan Foster earned all-conference accolades. Janelle
Avila (So., F) and Rachel Overton (Sr., B) joined Javelet on the list.
Syracuse junior back Michelle Sola joined goalkeeper
Heather Hess on the all-conference team.
Providence junior midfielder Lauren Sickel rounded out the
list of All-BIG EAST First Team members.
Avila, Campanelli, Javelet and Rogers were unanimous
selections to the team.
Top seeded Villanova (14-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) will take on No.
4 seed Syracuse in the semifinals of the 2005 BIG EAST Championship Nov. 4 at
the Rutgers Stadium Complex in Piscataway, N.J. Action is slated to begin at
5:00 p.m., with the other semifinal between No. 2 seed Connecticut (14-5, 4-1)
and No. 3 seed Louisville set to start at 7:00 p.m.
The BIG EAST Championship finals will be played Nov. 6 at
noon and will be televised nationally on ESPNU on same-day delay at 5:00 p.m.
Eastern. The winner of the conference tournament will earn the league’s
automatic berth to the 16-team NCAA Division I Championship.
