Final Game Stats
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 4, 2005) —
Senior Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge,
N.J.) scored 3:11 into overtime to give the No. 2 seed University of Connecticut
field hockey team a 1-0 win over Louisville in the semifinals of the 2005 BIG
EAST Championship Friday night at Rutgers.
Helwig scored the game-clinching goal off feeds from Laura Puddle
(London, England) and Lizzy Peijs
(Venlo, Holland) following a penalty corner attempt.
With the win, the Huskies advance to Sunday’s BIG EAST Final where they will
face No. 1 seed Villanova beginning at 12:00 p.m. (ET) at Rutgers. The game will
be televised on a tape-delayed basis on ESPNU beginning Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
(ET).
The victory improves the Huskies’ record to 15-5 overall and gives them a chance
to win the BIG EAST Tournament title for the second consecutive season.
No. 1 seed Villanova, which won a share of the regular season title along with
UConn, advanced to the final following a 4-1 win over No. 4 seed Syracuse in
Friday’s other semifinal.
UConn dominated play throughout much of regulation but was unable to connect on
a score in the first 70 minutes despite out-shooting the Cardinals 14-4 for the
game and attempting 17 penalty corners to Louisville’s six.
The Huskies had a goal disallowed by Helwig at the 46:49 mark because the shot
was ruled to high off a corner attempt.
UConn will be looking for its second consecutive BIG EAST Tournament crown and
its sixth in the last eight seasons when it meets Villanova on Sunday,
