Field Hockey Blasts Past Boston College 3-2 in First Round of NCAA Tournament

PRINCETON, N.J. (November 12, 2005) - The University of Connecticut field hockey team scored three goals in under 15 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2005 NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Boston College took the lead early with a shot to the far post from Bronwen Kelly unassisted at 6:54. Kelly scored her second goal of the game, and third against the Huskies this season, when she hit in the rebound off a Boston College corner at 26:08. The Eagles would enter halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) scored her first career goal unassisted at 51:09 to bring the Huskies to within one goal. Just seven minutes later Aird batted in another off the feed from Sophomore Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.) to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Meagan Hoffman (West Granby, Conn.) sealed the win for UConn as she blasted the ball past BC’s goalkeeper Jillian Savoy at 65:02.

The Huskies out shot the Eagles 18 to nine and attempted nine penalty corner’s to BC’s six. Senior goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San Diego, Calif.) made four saves in the win.

UConn now owns an all-time record of 12-5 in NCAA first round games. Today’s game marked the first meeting between the Huskies and the Eagles in the opening round.

UConn will face Duke tomorrow in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. (ET) at Princeton’s Class of 1952 Stadium. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series with the Huskies 1-0. Their only meeting came during the 1992 regular season. Duke defeated Princeton 2-1 in double overtime to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal.

Tickets to the games will be on sale when the gates open 1 p.m. on Sunday. Adult tickets will cost $7, while tickets for children and students will cost $4 with a Student ID.
